Iran Renames Danish Pastries
Iranians love Danish pastries, but when they look for the flaky dessert at the bakery they now have to ask for"Roses of the Prophet Muhammad."
Bakeries across the capital were covering up their ads for Danish pastries Thursday after the confectioners' union ordered the name change in retaliation for caricatures of the Muslim prophet published in a Danish newspaper.
"Given the insults by Danish newspapers against the prophet, as of now the name of Danish pastries will give way to 'Rose of Muhammad' pastries," the union said in its order.
"This is a punishment for those who started misusing freedom of expression to insult the sanctities of Islam," said Ahmad Mahmoudi, a cake shop owner in northern Tehran.

Misusing freedom of expression, by expressing whatever you want? Delightfully illogical.
I myself don't like the Danish cartoons. They were basically going to do nothing but cause problems anyway, and a joke isn't worth that -- I like the comparison on other subjects that people generally don't go around pissing other people off because the have the right to. Or at least they turn 10.
But misusing freedom of expression? "Punishing" those who express their mind? It's ridiculous.

If the Danes have a right to publish their cartoons; don't the Iranians have a right to be pissed off, excercise their right to collective boycott, and even rename their foods if they want? I'm not talking about burning embassies or violence, so allow me to pre-empt anyone who raises this point, that is obviously not justified. My point is, freedom of speech is a two way road.

Of course they have a right to be pissed off, and exercise their right to collective boycott. The point is that changing the name of the pastries is just as fucking absurd as the Republican Congress changing the name of French Fries to Freedom Fries.

That was precisely what I first thought of when I heard about this, Norm.

Yes, call them Freedom Fries, that will show the French! lol.. how silly.
I am sure that the Danes are real upset that danish pastries are being call Roses of Muhammed. I can hear it now. "One Rose of Muhammed, Peace Be Upon Him, Please."

Well, I'm Danish and I personally find this quite amusing. In Denmark, Danish pastry isn't called Danish pastry either, it's called wienerbrød (named after Vienna).
If the purpose of this is to hurt the feelings of Danes or anything like that, I'm afraid the Iranian bakers are gonna fail miserably.

Wouldn't the new name have the exact opposite effect? Turning an ordinary pastry into a pleasentry fit for a diety...

Hey Danish person maybe they could make it up to the Iranians by sending them more pastries. Do they still have what they called studentabrød (spelling), when I was in Denmark, that would certainly satiate them.
