Intelligent Design?

The Wisdom of Parasites. The Loom: A blog about life, past and future
She finds a cockroach to make her egg's host, and proceeds to deliver two precise stings. The first she delivers to the roach's mid-section, causing its front legs buckle. The brief paralysis caused by the first sting gives the wasp the luxury of time to deliver a more precise sting to the head.

The wasp slips her stinger through the roach's exoskeleton and directly into its brain. She apparently use ssensors along the sides of the stinger to guide it through the brain, a bit like a surgeon snaking his way to an appendix with a laparoscope. She continues to probe the roach's brain until she reaches one particular spot that appears to control the escape reflex. She injects a second venom that influences these neurons in such a way that the escape reflex disappears.

From the outside, the effect is surreal. The wasp does not paralyze the cockroach. In fact, the roach is able to lift up its front legs again and walk. But now it cannot move of its own accord. The wasp takes hold of one of the roach's antennae and leads it--in the words of Israeli scientists who study Ampulex--like a dog on a leash.

A wonderful description to the start of a beautiful day. What, pray tell does this have to do with ID?

ID say that God guides evolution or creates life. If that is the case how could a sane God do this?

this cannot prove against ID. They might even tell us that god is emulating our parasitic behaviour of controlling other animals to be evil, and show us through leading the scientists to discover it:P

Remember, god is not defined. god is supposed to have created us, much smarter. Hence the phrase, "sane god" cannot apply in the sense we use it.

God is a limitless entity. One outside the law, one who IS the law. Hence, anything is possible with it, and presumably the reason many extremists wish to use it according only to their greed.

It sounds more like an example of how the right has taken control of America. First, they inject their victims with religion, then when they've lost the ability to think for themselves, they're controlled like robots.

I know I'm alone in this, but can we /please/ stop calling it "Intelligent Design"? It's creationism. Renaming it "Intelligent Design" or apparently, "ID" for short, is a brilliant marketing plan, sure, but it doesn't change the fact that it's creationism. Let's stop giving this credibility than it deserves, eh?

its similar Jaye, but not the same. its not creationism because we all (hopefully) know that the earth isn't 4,000 years old. but we don't know how we got here billions of years ago...maybe through an inteligent designer? I don't think so....but many do. And I think its safer to encourage that kind of thinking rather than thinking we have a "young" earth.

this is NOT a political metaphor. the roach is NOT the stunned american body-politic being led around by cunning predators. the venom to the brain is NOT 9-11. the wasp child is NOT supposed to be standing in for the modern neocon right or it's masters, the military industrial complex. honest. this is just a GOOD NEWS post about how marvellous and wonderous nature is, and also the guy who invented nature, mr. chas darwin.

I think this is proof God has a sense of humor. An "apparent" mistake in the relationship between his creatures is perhaps the best sign that NOBODY HAS IT RIGHT.

ID is still creationism. Creationism doesn't have to be 4,000 years ago. That's just one version of it.

Maybe I'm being a bit too sensitive here, but this bit bothered me:

She apparently use ssensors along the sides of the stinger to guide it through the brain, a bit like a surgeon snaking his way to an appendix with a laparoscope.

I understand why the wasp is referred to as a "she"---the wasp is a female. But why does the author switch pronouns for describing the surgeon? As in, "snaking his way..." Is the author suggesting that to be a surgeon is to be a male?

I don't understand. Someone please explain this to me.

Quote by Chron "how could a sane God do this?"

I don't believe the intelligent design crowd wants you to think about whether or not "God" is sane. Just believe and walk in line. It is my contention that the original post in this thread is intended to prove that God is a raving violent mad-deity, straight out of H.R. Geiger.

Quote by Kura: "Remember, god is not defined. god is supposed to have created us, much smarter. Hence the phrase, "sane god" cannot apply in the sense we use it. God is a limitless entity. One outside the law, one who IS the law."

I am not sure what you intend to say here, kura. You seem to be providing several terms of definition unto God in the above quote, without more than a period to separate the contradiction. 1.) "God is supposed to have created us" 2.) "God is a limitless entity" 3.) "One outside the law, one who IS the law." There are some problems with those examples. If God is limitless, can it be considered "an entity?" What about "The Entity?" If God is limitless, such a being could not choose to be less than limitless. If one is omniscient, by definition, one could not become "Not Omniscient" for any period of time. By the way, time wouldn't exist, for God, by your definition. If God created us, or even if it was "supposed to" create us, and just forgot or whatever, well then what? Sorry you're not allowed to talk, God was supposed ot create you, but he forgot. Are you talking about State Law, City Regulation or Federal Statutes when you say, law, law, law?

I agree that this may be a metaphor representing the current political atmosphere in the USA. Or to represent the "Moral Majority."

However, I think it is antirely more likely that our Author here has taken it upon himself to point out that if the Intelligent Design, ahem "theory," is widely supported, then the universe's "Intelligent Designer," has created life to treat other life altogether brutally. If this designer could create something so morbidly grotesque and unjust. A world so gory, wicked and cruel to the kind, gentle, and meek, as this we presently inhabit, Then it would have to be designed by a sadistic lunatic. Only if one assumes to value ad focus upon human life much more intently than any other in universe does this "ID" confabulation make sense at all. This is the path that leads back to the source, to the Creationism wackos and demagogues. I personally value my Dogs' lives more than most humans, and believe relgious fundamentalism is the most destructive force other than greed upon this earth. Reality is being continuously created by oour interactions with the quantum wave function. Whether you believe the Copenhagen Interpretation, or one of the Parallel Universe Theories doesn't really matter. The mathematics and conclusions are as deep as we can confidently go into the nature of our reality at this time. Quantum Mechanics is where our understanding begins to break down. Why are so many people living in the intellectual stone age on this subject? Comfort, I believe. People are fearful to know we are creating the universe through our "observation" of it. Our senses our not equipped to understand it properly in our day to day lives. But through science we are learning how the universe works, and there is no room for monotheistic jingoist chanting about intelligent design vs. evolution. What about this? The intelligent designer assemples her cosmic dustclouds, water, and radiation upon her galaxy-sized workbench. She then proceeds to assemble these ingredients knowing that the manner of assemblage, and ensemble of ingredients that were chosen will start out as simple planktons, and evolve into homo sapiens and Boa constrictors, and Narwhals, and wasps that usurp the motor controls of roaches. The mystery is in the componenets and the process by which life was created. The mystery is still unfolding about us, it's still wondrous, and Darwin and the modern Creationists' Gang of Idiots live happily ever after.

I have to go to work now, and perform mostly meaningless tasks for the majority of my waking hours, excuse me.

P.S. New slogan proposal for The Christian Right: "We own the idea of God"
We'll get the guy who did the Beatrice commercials to voice it.

Amazing! Now, if someone could explain the first time this happened...

Calling it ID, I believe is dangerous, the name implies that it is scientific. I don't care what other people might believe, but please, lets keep science pure.

good comment on the surgeon gender bias.
