A Moral Outrage
A debtors' prison where the lock away the right to vote. The Times is correct it's morally outrageous.
Stripping convicted felons of the right to vote is a slap at America's democratic ideals. Many states are backing away from this policy, understanding at last that voting rights are in fact basic human rights that should be abridged only in the rarest circumstances. That lesson has yet to penetrate the state of Washington, which has created a form of disenfranchisement that is straight out of "Oliver Twist."

In our current voting system, the right to vote has some legal protections, but is subject to assault on all sides by political organizations and even public officials. The real solution is a three part remedy of 1) mandatory voting, 2) same day registration, and 3) making election day a Federal holiday.
As it is now, most of the campaigns have nothing to do with actually persuading voters, but rather with mobilizing voters or preventing mobilization.
