Quicktime 7

I have a request. I'd appreciate it if those with technical issues would communicate with me via email. The link is top right on the main page. I have begun the transition to Quicktime 7 only, A goal I plan on reaching by the end of the year. This change will allow me to take advantage of the H.264 codec

System Requirements:

Mac OS X
A 400 MHz PowerPC G3 or faster Macintosh computer
At least 128MB of RAM
Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later

Windows
A Pentium processor-based PC or compatible computer
At least 128MB of RAM
Windows 2000/XP

For those of you still using Windows 98 and Windows Me you might want to try VLC Media Player PC users with XP can also use Quicktime Alternative will work for you. Some have complained about having to also download iTunes that of course is not necessary you can Download Quicktime Standalone Version

UPDATE A further note for Mac users: Quicktime 7 requires Panther or Tiger. For those on a budget you can get a copy of Panther on ebay for $30.00-$40.00 dollars, or just ask a friend who has moved on to Tiger for their copy of Panther. In addition any of you with copies of Panther you are not using and are willing to donate could leave a message here for those looking. If you're looking to make a buck you can always list it on Ebay making more availble through that source.

this site rocks

Is there any way to run these files without quicktime 7 on a mac? I don't have OS X 10.3 and so can't download that version of quicktime.

Not that I know of. See note for Mac users that I added.

I love this site. have you thought about setting it up as a podcast with video? There are utilities like fireant for both mac and PeeCee.

Quicktime is by far the best way to distribute video over the internet. It works ALL THE TIME! Please continue your work. It is essential for people like me that do not have the time to comb through all the bullshit shows and articles from the Riech Wing element.

Thanks

great, i'm glad you're standardizing the videos. if the viewer's OS doesn't support QT 7, then it's obviously time for an OS upgrade.

Anyone who can't use QuickTime 7, take a look at VLC.

http://www.videolan.org/

IIRC, at least some of the newer versions support H.264.

I just checked, and VLC support for H.264 is "experimental."

Maybe something else would be a better choice.

The confusion on the PC side might be related to QT 7 versions. When we were asked to upgrade to QT 7, I installed the QT+Itunes version linked at the time, which installed 7.02.

For the last week, I could not get videos to run. I have sucessfully resolved the issue on 2 pcs by installing the Standalone QT linked, which upgrades the version to 7.03.50.

I love the site Norm, great work.

Anybody who has iTunes knows that we've suddnely had to update the software many, many times. This has everything to do with the new video iPod. Clearly, Apple has had some issues incorporating Quicktime with iTunes and thus has had to update both programs often. Give it a week or two, and I'm sure the formats will stabilize.

As already mentioned, VLC (www.videolan.org) plays your QuickTime 7 MPEG4/H.264 files beautifully, I just checked that (Win XP Pro on an AthlonXP 2100+). It has much lower system requirements than QuickTime 7 (OS X 10.2 on the Mac), is much more optimized, especially on HD content (~ 10 - 20 times faster than QuickTime 7 on my system) and is available for Windows, Mac OS X, BeOS and all kinds of Linux/BSD derivates.

Only problem: Its browser plug-in doesn't seem to work with MPEG4/H.264-encoded files yet, at least not on Windows (maybe the OS X version does?). So it's not really an elegant solution, but if you'd set download links for the video files, too, people could at least view them off-site using VLC in case they have no other way to do so.

Thank you for using Quicktime, thank you for moving to H.264, and thank you for the amazing content.

Even on Windows, Quicktime > *.

Moving to Quicktime 7 is fine, I suppose, though Apple's Quicktime 7 player is quite a downgrade feature-wise from its Quicktime 6 player. And how are you going to accommodate Linux users? If they've got a reasonable solution, it seems plausible to do it.

While you're upgrading to Quicktime 7 on the site, may I make a plea to start using the crooksandliars.com approach to playing movies: a link. The in-browser approach you're doing now makes Safari, Firefox, and Camino very VERY slow to load. As in: a 10 second wait on my machine. In-browser also is really fun if I'd like to download the files to disk ("save to disk" doesn't always work).

Norm, I second the request for adding download links for videos. Sometimes I want to save them to view later and I also like to view them x2 size. I know I can zoom my screen in OSX, but the standalone player is a more elegant way to get a bigger picture.

as a mac user, I applause your choice for Quicktime, and H.264, but did you think about Flash video (really cross platforms).

check the audioblog(.com) service, it's a nifty solution and might saved you same space and Bandwith ;)

Yes, Quicktime. Finally a place that doesn't use that WMP garbage.

I third the request for a link to download the videos. Sometimes Safari will stop loading the movie in the middle.

Excellent site, and excellent choice to upgrade to QuickTime 7!

However, I'd like to 4th the download link request--it takes a good 10 seconds or more for OGM to load in Safari; it didn't occur to me that it was the in-browser video (I figured it was some sort of java code weirdness), but that would certainly make sense.

I also get a lag loading this page in Safari. I don't get it loading other sites with embedded Quicktime, so I don't think that's the cause. Unless of course it's specifically Quicktime 7 video that's causing the problem.

Forcing us to spend $130 to be able to see your clips is a bad idea.

See, I don't have $130 lying around to buy Mac OS 1.4 and I do not have the time to updrade all my computers. Only one of my computers is even running Mac OS 10.3 (the rest are on 10.2.8) and when I upgraded that one to 10.3.9, the keyboard backlight quit working. I had to downgrade back to 10.3.7 to get my backlight to work again.

So the decision to force all of us to upgrade for $130 just to see your fantastic video clips mean to me that I will no longer get to see the clips posted here.

Do you guys know that once the movie fully loads, you can right-click on the video and select 'Save Movie As...' and save the file to your hard drive?

Second, Flash won't let you save.

I am going to look into VLC to see if i can use it to see these videos.

I was having trouble with QT7; have an XP system but not Pentium... I downloaded Quicktime Alternative and voila: onegoodmove is again onegreatmov(ie).

Thanks for all the clips!!

This doesn't work with the free version, only Quicktime Pro.

As someone who compresses video footage on occasion, let me state that I TOTALLY understand why you want to go to H264. I want to totally move to this codec myself so am glad people like you are forcing the issue.

H264 Best Codec Ever.

another vote for a link to the movies.

1) Anyone can get the direct link to any video here by viewing the source code HTML of the page. In Safari it's VIEW --> VIEW SOURCE. Any other browser should let you view the source too.

Then simply find and drag the link into your downloads window. (Make sure you get the right link -- one of them is just an image.)

If I recall correctly, Norm used to have the direct link option here. My guess is too many people starting hotlinking the videos (stealing content for their own sites, not giving Norm credit, and using Norm's bandwidth in the process). It happens too much. If you want the direct link enough, do the legwork and dig it up from the source!

2) Robin, QT7 runs on 10.3 -- and if you've got it on one computer, why can't you upgrade the others? (Discs lost?)

Also, you don't need to shell out $130 to run H.264. You can get Panther on eBay for nothing if you're patient and resourceful enough. Of course, you can also get a copy the way many of us got ours... though we'll never admit how we did that. (Bit tortoise? What?)

Pah. Q7 still sucks. First I get sound no picture, now I get picture no sound. We hates it....

A linux user here. It seems Mplayer plugin for Firefox plays H.264 fine. But as others have said it would be nice not to have it embedded in the page so it doesn't pre buffer 10 meg everytime I come to the page.

OK, finally got it fixed. What a hassle. Makes me hate my PC and lurve my powerbook, for sure....

For those of you still using Windows 98 and Windows Me I believe Quicktime Alternative will work for you. I tried it and i get audio but no video.

WinME doesn't seem to want to work, and I've tried every suggestion, download, ..everything!!!!

I have loved onegoodmove for so long, and now I cannot view any of the video clips because of this conversion to Quicktime7... my little G3 iBook doesn't support the requirements needed for Quicktime7, so I'm stuck...I don't have cable (can't afford) and your clips of Jon Stewart and Bill Maher keep me going since I don't have access to their shows. Can you please provide another route for those of us who do not have Quicktime7 capability?? Thank you!
