Katrina in Black and White

Bag News Notes has some great black and white photos of the Katrina aftermath shot by Alan Chin. Why black and white, the photographer explains:
I shot it in black-and-white because we live in America, so no matter what happens, we always have visual elements that are very distracting. I was one of the only people who did this in black and white. I felt it should not be distracted by color, by the fact someone might have been wearing a hot pink t-shirt. I didn't want that irony in it. I wanted to get to the heart of the matter -- to the crucial thing.

I love that picture, yet, I have something off subject to say.
Why is it that George Bush is the only one that has stepped forward and said... I take responsibility?
Am I the only one that has heard this or do we not give him credit for anything he does?
Patmos - I heard this too. I think he did the right thing in taking the blame for the federal government's mismanagement; however, I do believe he should be held accountable for more than mismanagement of those under him. He should be held accountable for the policies that led to the unpreparedness as a whole. He is directly responsible for half of the National Guard being overseas as a result of a war campaign based on fear, public manipulation, and lies. I seriously doubt he'll ever apologize for that.
The thing to remember is that the Bush administration has excelled at saying whatever it is that they've determined needs to be heard by just enough of the people to allow them the leeway to continue raping and pillaging. They say what we want to hear and by the next news cycle we've forgotten the promises and lies and moved on to the next thing, and those who remember are dismissed as merely playing politics and sowing discord, or worse. Why should we give Bush credit for opening his mouth and saying something that wiser heads realized is the bare minimum necessary to avoid looking completely and irretrievably out of touch when it is less than we would accept from anyone else?
To Patmos...
"Taking responsibility" means more than just saying you're responsible. It means doing something about it. Saying "sorry" doesn't mean squat without the action to back it up. "Taking responsibility" would be stepping down and turning himself over to an international war crimes tribunal.
I'll give Bush "credit" for these things: * Stealing two presidential elections * Ignoring the "bin Laden" PDB in order to continue a vacation * Killing more Iraqi citizens than we can count * Torturing prisoners at Abu Ghraib * Violating the Geneva Conventions at Guantánamo Bay * Playing guitar, eating cake, and worrying about immigration during the worst natural disaster in the US in recent history.
I don't think anything he does to "take responsibility" for those things would -- or should -- ever satisfy anyone who has opposed him from the beginning.
Credit... Feh!
Those were some good snaps, but did you check out that guy's photo analysis of Laura Bush? That was pretty cool how he set that up. A lot of psychology in there (that's what I got my degree in).
Hmm...just got a thought...
amazing and quite moving silently from memory to present tears
I know it is not a popular opinion, yet I go back to the fact that he is the ONLY one that has said..... I failed!!! Grant it others have said... "No doubt I made some mistakes" and if memory serves me right, they were the democrats.
Do I think that this... "I failed" comment makes up for all the hurting...NO... Heck NO!! Yet, tell me what he has to lose? A 3rd term?
I was told a few weeks back that I was not allowed to bring up the past of other Presidents, that it has nothing to do with this situation or this article, yet for some reason I do not read any correction for the things that Tim Maddog has said concernig the mistakes of President Bush. If past is the past, then I would think that the past is the past.
This is just my personal opinion. Let me preface again... I am NOT a republican!. Yet, this is what I was able to see (i think that is because i am neither, republican or democrat) When George Bush realized that those in whom were given not only the honor but duty to take care of New Orleans & other states (Mayor, Govenor,Brownie) and whoever else, had failed, he stepped in and took over. Grant it, I agree, it was poor judgement to have put so much trust and power into the hands of others, yet that is what leadership does, it gives trust and sad to say, sometimes it comes back as a crap pie in the face.
Patmos rebutted:
Huh? Patmos, I said this in response to your giving Bush "credit" for something which is meaningless. I said the items in my list are the only things for which I would give him "credit" (though there are probably a few more negatives I could include). Bush's "credits" are still piling into each other in a chain-collision sort of way, and yes, these events are killing people.
"Past is past" doesn't occur until a true change of heart has occurred. It also requires the aggrieved to have forgiven the aforementioned past. I don't think for one minute that this has happened with Bush.
(Patmos, if you point me to the place in history where someone [it wasn't me] told you not to bring up the past histories of other [that would be "past"] presidents [which is redundant], I'd be happy to crispy-fry that straw man even further.)
And what does Bush have to lose? C'mon, you can figure that out!
But we digress.
I recall seeing a similar (color) photo of an evacuee wrapped in what appeared to be an American flag blanket, and the color most definitely distracted from the subject, just as Patmos and I are doing here. I hope I haven't exhuded an unintentional impression like that color photo did.
Sorry for feeding the troll, Norm.
I was told that if I continued to bring up Clinton's office hurricane that I would be removed from being able to comment.
Yet, everyone can bring up 4 years ago and be considered a person who has the right to speak his/her mind.
The way I see it, is that everyone wanted him to step up toooooo the plate, confess and then go out back and hang himself. Yet he did the 1st part, what bothers everyone is the fact that the truth has come out concerning the fact that a lot of other people should have been doing their job and they were not. They had days to evacuate people, they had days to organize, they had days to prepare. Yet they would rather sit in a helicopter and talk about who they would like to hit if anyone is critical about leadership.
Bush is not the only one to blame, if any president for the last 16 years would have listened about the levies they would have done something about it. He was not the 1st to cut a budget, he just did as those before him did.
My gripe is this.... You bitch when he doesnt and you bitch when he does. In all honesty the thing I appreciate about "W" is the fact that he could give a rat's crack about what people think. You see leadership does not take a poll for directions, if they did, it would be called following.
She is a tired, tired old lady and she's sitting outside without food or water or a place to lay her head because the government, it really dosen't matter which branch it was, decided that her life was not worth saving.
That's what that picture is about, not Bush or his wife, the war or the election, it's about being poor and/or black in this country and your percieved lack of worth.
