A City Underwater
Dodged a bullet my ass. They're in my crosshairs and it looks like they're in Keith Olbermann's crosshairs too. What a lovely bit of writing by our friend Keith on Katrina and Michael Chertoff's slip of the tongue. "Louisiana is a city that is under water," indeed.

The "city" of Louisiana (Keith Olbermann)
SECAUCUS — Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff said it all, starting his news briefing Saturday afternoon: "Louisiana is a city that is largely underwater..."
Well there's your problem right there.
If ever a slip-of-the-tongue defined a government's response to a crisis, this was it.
The seeming definition of our time and our leaders had been their insistence on slashing federal budgets for projects that might’ve saved New Orleans. The seeming characterization of our government that it was on vacation when the city was lost, and could barely tear itself away from commemorating V.J. Day and watching Monty Python's Flying Circus, to at least pretend to get back to work. The seeming identification of these hapless bureaucrats: their pathetic use of the future tense in terms of relief they could’ve brought last Monday and Tuesday — like the President, whose statements have looked like they’re being transmitted to us by some kind of four-day tape-delay.
But no. The incompetence and the ludicrous prioritization will forever be symbolized by one gaffe by of the head of what is ironically called “The Department of Homeland Security”: “Louisiana is a city…”
Politician after politician — Republican and Democrat alike — has paraded before us, unwilling or unable to shut off the "I-Me" switch in their heads, condescendingly telling us about how moved they were or how devastated they were — congenitally incapable of telling the difference between the destruction of a city and the opening of a supermarket.
And as that sorry recital of self-absorption dragged on, I have resisted editorial comment. The focus needed to be on the efforts to save the stranded — even the internet's meager powers were correctly devoted to telling the stories of the twin disasters, natural... and government-made.
But now, at least, it is has stopped getting exponentially worse in Mississippi and Alabama and New Orleans and Louisiana (the state, not the city). And, having given our leaders what we know now is the week or so they need to get their act together, that period of editorial silence I mentioned, should come to an end.
No one is suggesting that mayors or governors in the afflicted areas, nor the federal government, should be able to stop hurricanes. Lord knows, no one is suggesting that we should ever prioritize levee improvement for a below-sea-level city, ahead of $454 million worth of trophy bridges for the politicians of Alaska.
But, nationally, these are leaders who won re-election last year largely by portraying their opponents as incapable of keeping the country safe. These are leaders who regularly pressure the news media in this country to report the reopening of a school or a power station in Iraq, and defies its citizens not to stand up and cheer. Yet they couldn't even keep one school or power station from being devastated by infrastructure collapse in New Orleans — even though the government had heard all the "chatter" from the scientists and city planners and hurricane centers and some group whose purposes the government couldn't quite discern... a group called The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
And most chillingly of all, this is the Law and Order and Terror government. It promised protection — or at least amelioration — against all threats: conventional, radiological, or biological.
It has just proved that it cannot save its citizens from a biological weapon called standing water.
Mr. Bush has now twice insisted that, "we are not satisfied," with the response to the manifold tragedies along the Gulf Coast. I wonder which "we" he thinks he's speaking for on this point. Perhaps it's the administration, although we still don't know where some of them are. Anybody seen the Vice President lately? The man whose message this time last year was, 'I'll Protect You, The Other Guy Will Let You Die'?
I don't know which 'we' Mr. Bush meant.
For many of this country's citizens, the mantra has been — as we were taught in Social Studies it should always be — whether or not I voted for this President — he is still my President. I suspect anybody who had to give him that benefit of the doubt stopped doing so last week. I suspect a lot of his supporters, looking ahead to '08, are wondering how they can distance themselves from the two words which will define his government — our government — "New Orleans."
For him, it is a shame — in all senses of the word. A few changes of pronouns in there, and he might not have looked so much like a 21st Century Marie Antoinette. All that was needed was just a quick "I'm not satisfied with my government's response." Instead of hiding behind phrases like "no one could have foreseen," had he only remembered Winston Churchill's quote from the 1930's. "The responsibility," of government, Churchill told the British Parliament "for the public safety is absolute and requires no mandate. It is in fact, the prime object for which governments come into existence."
In forgetting that, the current administration did not merely damage itself — it damaged our confidence in our ability to rely on whoever is in the White House.
As we emphasized to you here all last week, the realities of the region are such that New Orleans is going to be largely uninhabitable for a lot longer than anybody is yet willing to recognize. Lord knows when the last body will be found, or the last artifact of the levee break, dug up. Could be next March. Could be 2100. By then, in the muck and toxic mire of New Orleans, they may even find our government's credibility.
Somewhere, in the City of Louisiana.

Thanks, Norm!
Holeeeey cow. Olberman for prez? I hope he puts the text to that up on his blog... Actually, it is, here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6210240/ I know that I'm going to mirror it...
That's the best commentary I've seen in a long, long time. Kudos to Olberman.
Linked from our site. I'd pingback if I knew how. Thanks for posting this.
Thanks Norm. This is pretty unreal, does anyone think he will get some kind of slap for this kind of commentary?
Excellent commentary by Olbermann; I've posted a link here from my site in hope that others are exposed to this exceptionally well said rant.
Norm,
Thanks for posting this. Very fine commentary indeed.
what a great one!
give him the Murrow award
Wow.
As the waters rise in New Orleans it seems at last that the tide of public opinion is turning against this hideously inept, moronic, callous, murderous "President".
No longer content to seethe in silnce the people have begun to speak out in every way that their right to free speech will still allow.
Finally they are being heard, what a pity it took so many bodies to draw attention to their backslapping, cronyisitic governmental mismanagement.
Hail to the Chimp no longer, the American people need to be liberated from this tyranny, it's time for a regime change.
Absolutely elegant. I didn't think the news was allowed to sound like that any more.
It's about time some of the 'real' news exposed reality almost as well as The Daily Show does with the 'fake' news.
I've been gaining respect for Olbermann since last year's election but this piece really establishes him in my mind.
I stand firmly behind those words!
Christopher - you are so absolutely correct - regime change!
I have said it in an earlier post - wanna make a change - get off your arse and vote all of these yeahoos out of office - ALL of them. This is a governement of ineptitude - not just Shrub and his cronnies - all of those bigoted bastards - and bigotry isn't just about race here!
Enough of the slaughter of the innocents - no matter what country they are in.
What right does this country have (The good ole US of A) in telling other country governments how to serve and what is best to do for their country when these Washington arse wholes don't even know the geography of their own country!!!! The City of Louisiana!
I am so angry... I was home in Hawaii during the elections and voted and all I can say is you can't blame me for the vote on this one.
nuff said...
THIS JUST IN:
Do you want to know why the Feds were so slow to help read this from the New York Times:
"The Times-Picayune, Louisiana's largest newspaper, published an open letter to Mr. Bush on Sunday that called for the firing of every official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
"We're angry, Mr. President, and we'll be angry long after our beloved city and surrounding parishes have been pumped dry," said the newspaper, which endorsed Mr. Bush for president in 2000 but made no endorsement in 2004."
Think about it.

Oh how embarrassing is it for the nation of the US, when the peoples republic of china can do the very things that the US can't.
http://premium.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/asiapcf/09/01/china.typhoon.ap/
That's right 600,000 poor chinese people evacuated. No need for helicopters or boats etc after the event. Who would have thought you could ever say the Chinese government cares more for its citizens than the US. Shame America, shame
Norm, gonna be linking to you for all the September 5 entries. Damn good ones. Thanks especially for the Olbermann video. Great commentary.
Take care.
Boom, Bam! What the fuck just happen?
Go Keith!
Thanks for the posting and thank you more so for running everything quicktime as I am having problems with Windows Media Player. I enjoy crooksandliars for media as much as the next person, but I've found that onegoodmove and its quicktime set up is much more efficient and the stream never fails. Take care and keep up the wonderful work. I'll spread the word.
That about sums it up. Total, utter incompetency.
Ouch.
Who is this guy? Finally, someone in the media with some balls!
I just emailed Keith Olbermann to thank him for his hard-hitting editorial. We need to support these brave voices in the media. I would encourage everyone else to email him with your "thanks". Let him know that we appreciate his work.
I emailed them too. That clip was superb.
<3
I just emailed him too.
Thanks so much for posting this!
Reality Bites,
He used to be a sports commentator on ESPN.
Now this is where you will throw stones.
Olbermann gives his commentary as if he and all his buddies knew that the levies were going to fail and a city would be under water. He sounds as if He had even the slightest idea that if a storm was to hit, then the city would be under water.
Now I am not all that of an Olbermann watcher, I have enjoyed some of his broadcast thingies in the past and no doubt the future looks like I will be watching him again.
So here is my thought... Where were he and all his buddies last year when the budget was cut once again, not the 1st time I think we all need to remember and not just by Bush, but by Billy and Daddy Bush and who all knows before that. Yet, back to my point... When did he do a news cast on the fact that the budgets were cut, on the fact that HE KNEW the city would be under water.
Where were all these people before last week? Where were the govenors and Mayors and the Senators and people of Congress. Why did we hear about this only after a city is now underwater?!?
Where were the watchman screaming, yelling, banging the bell!!!! Sounding the alarm!!!! Why didn't they take out an ad in the New York Times or even do a cheap budget commercial (they could have gotten Michael Moore to direct it).
Where were these men and women that now come out and say.... Oh! Oh! Oh! we knew it!!! We knew it!!! We knew it!!! And did nothing to warn, did nothing to make it a priority. Why didn't Olbermann bring this up during the election year, why didn't Larry King Live, get a levie to call in and ask Elizabeth Taylor what should would do about it (if you have not seen the episode with Taylor and Larry King, you have to find it)
Yet, the situation now is.... President Bush knew!!! Well when he didn't respond why didn't someone, better yet the person who told him, even more so that Senator lady that wants to hit someone, why didn't she just take out a 50 dollar add and run it in a newspaper or a radio spot or make it a campaign slogan!!!! ???? !!!!!
You might be saying... Well, Patmos, I knew about it!!! I don't recall hearing you say anything about it? I don't recall Cindy Shehann putting a tent on top of the levie and not coming off until someone did something about it. I don't recall any War Lover, renting a bus and taking 5,00 people to line up against the levie and shout... Hell no, we won't go, Hell no, we won't go!!!!
However, I am sure Bush's vacation kept him from organizing the rally.
Hey, you know me.... Just a thought, and several questions.
Quite brave of him to speak up. What a patriot...
I've been a fan of Keith for a while now. I remember back in November when he was doing pieces of the election fraud in Ohio, the only guy on all the channels that did that (that I know of).
Keith is obviously the man.
Excuse me, but I believe most of America has been aware that New Orleans is a city that exists below sea level, the lake kept at bay by a weak man made levee. If leaders would even heeded the advice of the Corps of Enineers - yes, this may not have happened. They are all sitting back mumbling to themselves "I told you so". New Orleans flooding was never a question of IF, but WHEN. The problem lies in the fact that the local government, state goverment, and Federal government (and in that order) are responsible for risk management of these structures. No one ever believed it would happen in our lifetime, much less their tenure as leaders. Well, it did. And people are all surprised and blaming a president who bears the burden of all things bad and gets credit for nothing he does that may be right.
If you never knew New Orleans was a water disaster waiting to happen, please do some research, it's out there. Or better yet, just go to a map store and buy a topographical map of the city, if you know how to read one.
EDUCATE YOURSELF, Keith Olberman did.
Wow Anon, such an attitude towards a man that asked some simple questions. Yet as of now still go un-answered.
Grant it, I am one that only has time to read headlines and don't have the luxury of going to bookstores or map stores or even the ability to watch a PBS special.
I work when added up by the hours of work that I do, over 80 weeks a year, compared to the average work week.. Lucky for me I fight insomnia, however I never stop working. I would even dare say that the majority of Americans get their news from Headlines.
I do worry though about the leadership we are electing if the only thing they care about is their generation, if you ask me.... that is very very very poor leadership.
Unfortunately, it's the only leadership we know. There are other countries out there with a better grasp on it, but we call them less civilized because they don't have internet connections.
Thanks for sharing all of the details of your work-heavy life, you used the word "I" 6 times. Must be a "Me" generation thing.
It was well known, I remember seeing a show on the discovery channel about just such a thing happening. This should be a suprise to no one, least of all FEMA, whose job it is to sit around and plan for these things.
FEMA lsited 3 major potential disaters in early 2001 Terrorist attack on New York Hurricain in New Orleans Earthquake in San Francisco
They were doing thier jobs, it was our adminstration, our Congress, our chosen leaders, not the buracrats who failed to act. There are some very good people in FEMA, it was their politically appointed chiefs (a man who used to run Arabian horse compitions for one) who dropped the ball. There was a plan, it was just practiced last year, by the newly created disater rehearsal organization seperated from FEMA as part of the new homland "Security" department (now there's a good idea, one group to practice, one to act). The number of failiures can't be counted. One thing that didn't fail was many of the lower level folks in FEMA.
Point your finger where it belongs. Be careful with that thing, it might be loaded.
To preface, I am definitely one of the outraged, not anything resembling an apologist for the Federal government.
I praise Keith Olbermann for his stand and conviction. I take issue with the cheap analogy. It's not great writing or journalism, it's sort of elementary. There's no equating the mismanagement of this tragedy with another idiotic thing said at a press conference. That's Keith trying to make a point and to prove he's clever. No need for that at a time like this. The facts are compelling and damning enough. Chertoff's flub wasn't anything close to a lynchpin, just stupid.
And to anon, George Bush has failed enough on his watch for the country to finally demand that he and his administration be made accountable. People who oppose him are going to add everything possible to the list, so Katrina will get added. That's the way of the world and should be nothing new to Republicans. These people are also starting to become the majority.
The President is ultimately responsible for the Federal response to this tragedy and again, he was nowhere near the sight of the event until well after the fact. The impact of Federal agencies and resources were not felt until entirely too late. Too late for him to be called an effective leader. Effective leaders make events like this their personal responsibility and do everything in their power to be a representative of competence and control (see Rudy Giuliani).
When this is looked at in light of the fact that Republicans wanted Clinton impeached for marital infidelity and asking a girl not to tell anyone about it (in a time of great prosperity and relative peace), it's truly absurd. For any sane individual, there is just no comparison. Impeachment is about protecting our country, not creating shame. Our country needs better protection than what is currently in place, and we need it right now. It's not partisan, it's human.
Can somebody please post the proper email address to address our gratitude for this editorial?
People can feel free to send me hate mail at grglvr@hotmail.com :)
Asolutely on point and refreashing. Perhaps the only mainstream coverage worthy of the scope of this tragedy that I have seen. Would personally add some more about the role of race and class in this tragedy, but regardless, I am grateful for this brave editorial.
Just like to point out that in Britain, newspapers were saying before the hurricane struck that the levees were built to withstand a force 2/3 hurricane. The hurricane, as we all know, was a force 5 i.e. the levees were going to fail.
If they were saying that over here, then I'd be surprised if nobody was saying that over there. And I wasn't reading Levee Weekly either... it was in the broadsheets.
Perfect....
This is one of the best editorials made in recent history. It hits every point right on the head.
Gregg- His analogy was to point out the disconnect politicians have with the needs of its people and with what's going on in the real world. The real problem extends beyond just mismanagement. As people were dying, as little girls were being raped, and as a military blockade kept aid workers out of the area, Bush turned to the leader of FEMA and said, "You're doing one heck of a job"... That's the problem right there...
Reading is fun. One year is not enough time to fix a levee. This was a local and state problem, but why would anyone bother to read?

Also the section that failed and flooded the city was recently upgraded and was not on the list for further upgrades. If anyone is at fault it is the engineers who did not plan for overflow undermining the concrete wall from the rear, a moot point now.
Nice articles and comments on free omaha hi http://www.hobbyworkshop.com/omaha-hi.html free omaha hi and other related issues. Why look for you own favorite when free omaha hi is everyones favorite?
Possibly his frequent caustic treatment of inept public employees will excuse Keith on this bomb. The comment, however, should have been made long ago and I thank GOD somebody said it with a corporate backdrop. Even better yet, someone with his eloquence. Long live the new flesh, and he should get the big desk for it.
OUR "REAL " GOVERNMENT IS IN ISRAEL:
NO MORE FOREIGN AID TO ISRAEL. THE "REAL" WELFARE STATE
NO ONE PAYS ATTENTION TO MY "BULL" BUT I PUT IT OUT THERE ANYHOW. RON WALDRON.
JEWS IN AMERICA: FINE IF THEY ARE AMERICAN/JEWS, not foreign agents for Israel. HOW-EVER TO LOBBY FOR FOREIGN AID TO ISRAEL ON THE BASIS THEY DO IS WRONG. THEY WERE THE PURCHASERS, BROKERS, AND 70% OF THE USERS OF SLAVES DURING THAT ERA OF TIME. YET AMERICA TOOK THE TOTAL BLAME. THEY CONTINUE TO IGNORE HUMANE RIGHTS TO THIS DATE. ITS NO WONDER MEXICO'S PRESIDENT THINKS HE NOW CAN DICTATE LEGISLATION TO US. OUR GOVERNMENT SUPPORTS OTHERS MORE THEN OUR OWN, WHICH HAS BECOME VERY APPARENT OVER THE LAST WEEKS, MONTHS AND YEARS.

WE MUST CHANGE THIS CRAP. VOTE FOR AN AMERICAN FOR AMERICA. the government wasn't prepared, scrimped on storm spending and shifted its attention from dealing with natural disasters to fighting the global war on terrorism.
The president's 35-minute Air Force One flyover of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama was the perfect metaphor for his entire presidency: detached, disconnected, and disengaged. Preferring to take in America's suffering -- whether caused by the war in Iraq or Hurricane Katrina -- from a distance. In this case, 2,500 feet. Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), which was enveloped by the new Department of Homeland Security with a new mission aimed at responding to the attacks of al-Qaida.
LOOKS LIKE RACISM IN NEW ORLEANS.
"Israel has created in the Occupied Territories a regime of separation based on discrimination, applying two separate systems of law in the same area and basing the rights of individuals on their nationality. This regime is the only one of its kind in the world, and is reminiscent of apartheid in South Africa." Is what happened in New Orleans the wave of the future in America as well as in such far-away places as Darfur and Iraq -- where genocide is not only feasible but is actually happening? This "administration" is very good at doing nothing when ACTION could save thousands of lives.
"It's not like New Orleans was caught off guard. This could have been prevented.
"There's military right here in New Orleans, but for three days they weren't even mobilized. You'd think this was a Third World country.
"I'm in the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans, the only part that isn't flooded. The water is good. Our parks and schools could easily hold 40,000 people, and they're not using any of it."
WE USA TAX PAYERS NEED TO DEMAND, NO MORE AID TO ISRAEL AT ALL. ENFORCE UN SANCTIONS. NOW!!
WE ARE NOW OFFICIALLY IN A DICTATORSHIP journalists barred from New Orleans killing spree The Bush administration's war on the people of New Orleans long ago passed from outrage to atrocity. WHY HAS BUSH NOW BANNED ALL REPORTERS FROM NEW ORLEANS WHILE RUMSFELD'S HIRED-KILLER MERCENARIES MURDER OUR CITIZENS?? This is what Third World tinpot dictators do--they hide the bodies. They ignore the rule of law and the idea of democracy and a constitution. Massive BLOOD ON THEIR HANDS: the blood of more than 2,000 soldiers in Iraq, more than 100,000 Iraqi men, women, children, and babies, assorted "mysterious deaths" of maybe hundreds of investigative reporters, biographers, and whistleblowers over the years, high-level assassination plots, and now at least 30,000 or 40,000 American citizens in New Orleans--this is evil in its purest form and MUST BE RESISTED.
SO I ASK AGAIN: WHAT IS BUSH TRYING TO HIDE? WHY CAN'T THE MEDIA WITNESS HIS ATROCITIES?
IMPEACH, INDICT, IMPRISON THE ENTIRE BUSH ADMINISTRATION NOW The entire foundation of our democratic heritage has been almost totally shredded by these ghouls. Watch for the "camps" in your state. Welcome to hell. When looking good for the cameras is more important than dying human beings. Can it get any worse? God please help this country. As specific orders began arriving to the firefighters in Atlanta, a team of 50 Monday morning quickly was ushered onto a flight headed for Louisiana. The crew's first assignment: to stand beside President Bush as he tours devastated areas. "Last night, Gov. Kathleen Babineaux Blanco said 300 Iraq-hardened Arkansas National Guard members were inside New Orleans with shoot-to-kill orders.
" 'These troops are...under my orders to restore order in the streets,' she said. 'They have M-16s, and they are locked and loaded. These troops know how to shoot and kill and they are more than willing to do so if necessary and I expect they will.' " The word goes out on the news "violence and looting has broken out", and from that time on all the victims are treated like they are all criminals. The survivors are herded on trains and busses not knowing or having a say about where they are going. Relief is held back so people won't want to stay to rebuild. Four helicopters and soldiers in dress uniforms are positioned behind the president for a photo-op instead of helping in the rescue and relief efforts. Someone has to speak up and say enough is enough. This will not stand in our USA. How many more American citizens have to die before the rest of us stand up and shout "NO MORE". Please God give someone the strength to step up and lead us out of this darkness. At least seven bodies were scattered outside the convention center, a makeshift staging area for those rescued from rooftops, attics and highways. The sidewalks were packed with people without food, water or medical care, and with no sign of law enforcement.
An old man in a chaise lounge lay dead in a grassy median as hungry babies wailed around him. Around the corner, an elderly woman lay dead in her wheelchair, covered up by a blanket, and another body lay beside her wrapped in a sheet.
"I don't treat my dog like that," 47-year-old Daniel Edwards said as he pointed at the woman in the wheelchair.
"You can do everything for other countries, but you can't do nothing for your own people," he added. "You can go overseas with the military, but you can't get them down here."
The street outside the center, above the floodwaters, smelled of urine and feces, and was choked with dirty diapers, old bottles and garbage.
"They've been teasing us with buses for four days," Edwards said. "They're telling us they're going to come get us one day, and then they don't show up."
Every so often, an armored state police vehicle cruised in front of the convention center with four or five officers in riot gear with automatic weapons. But there was no sign of help from the National Guard.
At one point the crowd began to chant "We want help! We want help!" Later, a woman, screaming, went on the front steps of the convention center and led the crowd in reciting the 23rd Psalm, "The Lord is my shepherd ..."
"We are out here like pure animals," the Issac Clark said.
"We've got people dying out here - two babies have died, a woman died, a man died," said Helen Cheek. "We haven't had no food, we haven't had no water, we haven't had nothing. They just brought us here and dropped us."
REMEMBER THE LOOTING, SHOOTING, AND RIOTING STARTED 5 & 6 DAYS AFTER "KATRINA" CAME ASHORE.
ANGER FOR NO REASON, WELFARE PEOPLE, POOR LAZY. ??
PLEASE INVESTIGATE, AND REPORT:
DECEPTIONS HAVE RUN WILD FOR SEVERAL YEARS . CHURCH CONGREGATIONS BEING ASK FOR 10% OF THEIR WAGES AS TITHING. MORE FOR ALMS. THEN WHEN THERE IS A DISASTER THEY ARE ASKED FOR DONATIONS FOR THE VICTIMS. WHERE DOES THE MONEY COME FROM THAT THEY HAVE INVESTED ON WALL STREET, AND THE STOCK MARKETS. TAX FREE PROPERTIES, HEAVY INVESTMENTS, NEVER TOUCHED FOR THE REASONS IT WAS GIVEN TO THEM. THE BIGGEST FRAUD FOR THE LONGEST PERIOD OF TIME.
PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW JUST HOW THE " CHRISTIAN RELIGION " HAS MISREPRESENTED THE ACCOUNTING OF THE MONIES.. IT IS actually fraudulent, exploitive and even blasphemous.
the government is late responding to the victims of katrina. but the big deal evangelical system sure did not dip into their funds neither. just keep asking for more from the members.
members that continue to give in good faith to a corrupted system!!
Tithing has been taught in the New Testament Church for quite a while. In many European countries your tithe is taken out of your paycheck, just like taxes. Here in America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, we have a Constitution to protect us from such tyranny. But that hasn’t stopped organizations such as the Mormons (Latter Day Saints) to attach the issue to such important principles as attaining their Godhood! Without tithing they cannot get a "temple recommend" and without the temple recommend they cannot get into the Temple to perform their ordinances that help them earn their Godhood. But is our doctrine any better? Many Protestant Churches teach that God can’t bless you if you don’t tithe! They’ll say, "Haven’t you ever read Malachi? He said that if you don’t tithe, you are robbing God!" Now I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be found guilty of robbing God! Malachi goes on to say that "you are cursed with a curse" if you do not tithe! Wow! That sounds like serious business. But was Malachi written to the Church, or to the Jews under the Law? Malachi 1:1, says it was, "the oracle of the word of the Lord to Israel". Notice it does not say, "the oracle of the word of the Lord to the Church". We are not under the Law, but under the New Covenant of Grace. The Law no longer has a hold on us (Hebrews 8:6-13). We are no longer bound by the tenets of the Law (Gal 3:25). We are justified by faith, not by works of the Law (Romans 3:28). We are redeemed from the curse of the Law (Galatians 3:13). Anyone who has questions about this subject should stop and read the fifteenth chapter of Acts; the third and fourth chapter of Romans; the eighth through the eleventh chapter of Hebrews; the second chapter of Ephesians; and the whole book of Galatians! This is a foundational teaching of the New Testament Church. This is one of the biggies, an "essential" if you will. We are saved and justified by Grace alone, through Faith alone! Paul says in Galatians:

The International Federation of Journalists on Monday urged the United Nations to investigate deaths of media staff at the hands of coalition forces in Iraq. Rubai the 67th journalist or media assistant to be killed in Iraq, killed by US troops since the invasion of Iraq, March 2003. In addition, two are still missing, it said. In contrast, a total of 63 journalists were killed in the Vietnam War, which lasted from 1955 to 1975. People are realizing that 9/11 is the key to regaining our freedom, to taking our country back from the cynical psychopaths running the US government who are implementing diverse and subversive programs of mass murder all over the world. Preacher Pat Robertson's call for the American government to assassinate Venezuela's president may have done irreparable damage to his already shaky standing among the nation's religious and political circles.
Karl Rove's "Murder, Inc." High level European intelligence sources now report that Karl Rove coordinated Hobeika's assassination. The hit on Hobeika employed Syrian intelligence agents. Syrian President Bashar Assad was trying to curry favor with the Bush administration in the aftermath of 9-11 and was more than willing to help the White House. In addition, Assad's father, Hafez Assad, had been an ally of Bush's father during Desert Storm, a period that saw Washington give a "wink and a nod" to Syria's occupation of Lebanon. Rove wanted to help Sharon avoid any political embarrassment from an in absentia trial in Brussels where Hobeika would be a star witness. Rove and Sharon agreed on the plan to use Syrian Military Intelligence agents to assassinate Hobeika. Rove saw Sharon as an indispensable ally of Bush in ensuring the loyalty of the Christian evangelical and Jewish voters. Sharon saw the plan to have the United States coordinate the hit as a way to mask all connections to Jerusalem.

I'm a high school drop out, living in a small modest home. We live on a small income. I feel fortunate , but guilty being able to eat three times a day. The community here is very economically depressed. The industry has moved south, or to Mexico, or out-sourced to India & China. A large part of this community eats once a day. I feel embarrassed to see Americans with such extravagant spending at the Oscar awards. Such class distinction and governess disguised as Democracy. Taking more from the poor, giving to the Rich. Robin Hood where are you? Of course it is young people from communities like ours that die fighting for foreign agent causes. We need real change, not just at the Presidency. BUT the control strings in congress. Get rid of lobbies.Reform. Maybe some Accountability. It is OK to DREAM, isn't it ? UNITE. We of this community would die for the "Victims of Katrina". We will give what we can. We will fight for their rights against imperialism. We will not fight for oil, nor for occupation of another's land & resources. We are still Americans, will we ever be America again?
SHOOT TO KILL then go to WASHINGTON!
New Orleans and the Death of the Common Good The destruction of New Orleans represents a confluence of many of the most pernicious trends in American politics and culture: poverty, racism, militarism, elitist greed, environmental abuse, public corruption and the decay of democracy at every level.
Much of this is embodied in the odd phrasing that even the most circumspect mainstream media sources have been using to describe the hardest-hit victims of the storm and its devastating aftermath: "those who chose to stay behind." Instantly, the situation has been framed with language to flatter the prejudices of the comfortable and deny the reality of the most vulnerable.
It is obvious that the vast majority of those who failed to evacuate are poor: they had nowhere else to go, no way to get there, no means to sustain themselves and their families on strange ground. While there were certainly people who stayed behind by choice, most stayed behind because they had no choice. They were trapped by their poverty and many have paid the price with their lives.
Yet across the media spectrum, the faint hint of disapproval drips from the affluent observers, the clear implication that the victims were just too lazy and shiftless to get out of harm's way. There is simply no understanding not even an attempt at understanding the destitution, the isolation, the immobility of the poor and the sick and the broken among us.
This is from the "respectable" media; the great right-wing echo chamber was even less restrained, of course, leaping straight into giddy convulsions of racism at the first reports of looting in the devastated city. In the pinched-gonad squeals of Rush Limbaugh and his fellow hatemongers, the hard-right media immediately conjured up images of wild-eyed darkies rampaging through the streets in an orgy of violence and thievery.

In the pinched-gonad squeals of Rush Limbaugh and his fellow hatemongers, the hard-right media immediately conjured up images of wild-eyed darkies rampaging through the streets in an orgy of violence and thievery.
Not that the mainstreamers ignored the racist angle. There was the already infamous juxtaposition of captions for wire service photos, where depictions of essentially the same scene desperate people wading through flood waters, clutching plastic bags full of groceries were given markedly different spins. In one picture, a white couple are described as struggling along after finding bread and soda at a grocery store. But beneath an almost identical photo of a young black man with a bag of groceries, we are told that a "looter" wades through the streets after robbing a grocery store. In the photo I saw, this evil miscreant also had a gasp! pack of diapers under his arm.
Almost all of the early "looting" was like this: desperate people of all colors stranded by the floodwaters broke into abandoned stores and carried off food, clean water, medicine, clothes. Perhaps they should have left a check on the counter, but then again what exactly was going to happen to all those perishables and consumer goods, sitting around in fetid, diseased water for weeks on end? (The mayor now says it could be up to 16 weeks before people can return to their homes and businesses.) Obviously, most if not all of it would have been thrown away or written off in any case. Later, of course, there was more organized looting by criminal gangs, the type of lawless element of every hue, in every society whose chief victims are, of course, the poor and vulnerable. These criminal operations were quickly conflated with the earlier pilferage to paint a single seamless picture of the American media's favorite horror story: Black Folk Gone Wild.
But here again another question was left unasked: Where were the resources the money, manpower, materiel, transport that could have removed all those forced to stay behind, and given them someplace safe and sustaining to take shelter? Where, indeed, were the resources that could have bolstered the city's defenses and shored up its levees? Where were the National Guard troops that could have secured the streets and directed survivors to food and aid? Where were the public resources the physical manifestation of the citizenry's commitment to the common good that could have greatly mitigated the brutal effects of this natural disaster?
"President Coolidge came down here in a railroad train, With a little fat man with a notebook in his hand. The president say, "Little fat man, isn't it a shame What the river has done to this poor cracker's land?"
Well, we all know what happened to those vital resources. They had been cut back, stripped down, gutted, pilfered looted to pay for a war of aggression, to pay for a tax cut for the wealthiest, safest, most protected Americans, to gorge the coffers of a small number of private and corporate fortunes, while letting the public sector the common good wither and die on the vine. These were all specific actions of the Bush Administration including the devastating budget cuts on projects specifically designed to bolster New Orleans' defenses against a catastrophic hurricane. Bush even cut money for strengthening the very levees that broke and delivered the deathblow to the city. All this, in the face of specific warnings of what would happen if these measures were neglected: the city would go down "under 20 feet of water," one expert predicted just a few weeks ago.
But Bush said there was no money for this kind of folderol anymore. The federal budget had been busted by his tax cuts and his war. And this was a deliberate policy: as Bush's mentor Grover Norquist famously put it, the whole Bushist ethos was to starve the federal government of funds, shrinking it down so "we can drown it in the bathtub." As it turned out, the bathtub wasn't quite big enough -- so they drowned it in the streets of New Orleans instead.
But as culpable, criminal and loathsome as the Bush Administration is, it is only the apotheosis of an overarching trend in American society that has been gathering force for decades: the destruction of the idea of a common good, a public sector whose benefits and responsibilities are shared by all, and directed by the consent of the governed. For more than 30 years, the corporate Right has waged a relentless and highly focused campaign against the common good, seeking to atomize individuals into isolated "consumer units" whose political energies kept deliberately underinformed by the ubiquitous corporate media can be diverted into emotionalized "hot button" issues (gay marriage, school prayer, intelligent design, flag burning, welfare queens, drugs, porn, abortion, teen sex, commie subversion, terrorist threats, etc., etc.) that never threaten Big Money's bottom line.
Again deliberately, with smear, spin and sham, they have sought and succeeded in poisoning the well of the democratic process, turning it into a tabloid melee where only "character counts" while the rapacious policies of Big Money's bought-and-sold candidates are completely ignored. As Big Money solidified its ascendancy over government, pouring billions over and under the table into campaign coffers, politicians could ignore larger and larger swathes of the people. If you can't hook yourself up to a well-funded, coffer-filling interest group, if you can't hire a big-time Beltway player to lobby your cause and get you "a seat at the table," then your voice goes unheard, your concerns are shunted aside. (Apart from a few cynical gestures around election-time, of course.) The poor, the sick, the weak, the vulnerable have become invisible in the media, in the corporate boardroom, "at the table" of the power players in national, state and local governments. The increasingly marginalized and unstable middle class is also fading from the consciousness of the rulers, whose servicing of the elite goes more brazen and frantic all the time.
When unbridled commercial development of delicately balanced environments like the Mississippi Delta is bruited "at the table," whose voice is heard? Not the poor, who, as we have seen this week, will overwhelmingly bear the brunt of the overstressed environment. And not the middle class, who might opt for the security of safer, saner development policies to protect their hard-won homes and businesses. No, the only voice that matters is that of the developers themselves, and the elite investors who stand behind them.
"Louisiana, Louisiana, They're trying to wash us away"
The destruction of New Orleans was a work of nature but a nature that has been worked upon by human hands and human policies. As global climate change continues its deadly symbiosis with unbridled commercial development for elite profit, we will see more such destruction, far more, on an even more devastating scale. As the harsh, aggressive militarism and brutal corporate ethos that Bush has injected into the mainstream of American society continues to spread its poison, we will see fewer and fewer resources available to nurture the common good. As the political process becomes more and more corrupt, ever more a creation of elite puppetmasters and their craven bagmen, we will see the poor and the weak and even the middle class driven further and further into the low ground of society, where every passing storm economic, political, natural will threaten their homes, their livelihoods, their very existence.
