Anyone who thinks that's his thumb needs to pause the film, then take a good long look at their own hand. And maybe try to repeat that gesture. What you're looking at is the back of the hand, knuckles horizontal. There is absolutely no way to give a "thumbs up" with your knuckles horizontal. The thumb is neither bends that way or is that long.

I have to agree with the last thumb comment. There's NO way that his thumb could be so thin (from any angle) or straight, not to mention long. My theory is that this is actually his index finger. His thumb his folded over to the left of this finger, thus making his hand appear wider. This wideness on the left side of the finger that is shown is normally known to be the result of raising the middle finger. If the thumb is folded down, perhaps into the palm of the hand, then there would only be one finger's worth of width visible to the left of the extended middle finger. With his thumb NOT folded into his palm, and with his index finger extended, the same space that we're used to interpreting as indicating an extended middle finger could easily appear. We think that the middle finger is raised rather than the index finger.

First the creds: I'm an AVID editor who's dealt with all kinds of video files for at least ten years now (not to mention the old-style edit controlers I operated in the years before digital video editing). So I've got good background in discerning badly pixalated images.

If you look at the scene frame-by-frame, the finger clearly fades to the left - where your thumb would fall if it were coming down from a "thumbs-up".

Although I'm a liberal, and would love for this to be yet another sign of Bush's contempt for the American people, it is clearly a thumb he's holding up. I think the pic in the upper right corner is ambiguous. What isn't ambiguous is when you watch the motion of his hand as he brings it up in the video. You can clearly see the circle formed by his thumb and forefinger when his hand is at an angle, while the a different finger is clearly sticking up at the same time. In other words, his thumb and forefinger are doing other things.

Here's a capture from Norm's video clip, with a simple "edge detection" effect showing that it's not the bird.

Put your right fist on the table. Then put your thumb up. Then point that straight in front of you. That's pretty much what we're looking at here.

His hand is turned about 30 degrees counter-clockwise. To the left you see his thumb, then following to the right is his index finger, then middle and ring finger are down. This looks doctored to me, for a host of reasons.

The hand appears to be squashed, and not wide enough for his wrist. The lighting on the hand is wrong in context with the surroundings. There are significant artifacts in the video, including a shift in the position of the hand itself.

All of this could easily be explained away by the compression of the video to a web-friendly size, but I'm putting off judgement till I see real footage of the event.

A higher-resolution copy of the clip from the TiVo made it really clear that it was just his thumb and nothing more. If you watch the low-res quicktimes, it does become a little more obvious that it's his thumb when he's swinging his arm back down to his side. His hand twists back to a neutral position and the offending digit is definitely on the side of his hand.

I just assumed it was his middle finger when I first watched this, but just look a bit closer and it would be anatomically impossible. It was already pointed out that you can see that it's his thumb in the last couple frames where he puts his hand down. The finger is completely on the left side, which if it was his middle finger would mean he twisted his hand around in a way which would likely break a person's wrist.

It was then argued that it's obvious that the still image at the upper right shows it's his middle finger. Well, look at that picture again. Look at his wrist. Is he a starving Ethiopian with arms like twigs, or is that the narrower side of his arm, the side where his thumb would be?
