Religion and the Brain
"From a scientific point of view, we can make no distinction between the man who eats little and sees heaven and the man who drinks much and sees snakes. Each is in an abnormal physical condition, and therefore has abnormal perceptions. "—Bertrand Russell (1935)

I wonder what advice Bertrand Russell would have for we reality-based people if he were alive today.
No matter what he would advise, I would follow it, I adore him that much.
"...No matter what he would advise, I would follow it, I adore him that much...."
dude, miss the point much? :p
rob, dude, read Bertrand Russell's Why I'm Not A Christian and you will see why nearing adores him so much. Bertrand Russell was a genius! http://www.users.drew.edu/~jlenz/whynot.html
His comment may have been true when he said it, but science has looked into these abnormal states in the last 70 years and has found significant differences in the neurochemistry involved, the regions of the brain affected, and the lasting effects of the experiences on the individuals who have them. But it should be noted in the first place that the man who drinks much generally doesn't see snakes until he suddenly stops.
A pinch of salt. "Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man" - Matthew (15-11)
nearing, Jef, I was fooling around... I have read "WIANAC." It sits on this atheist's bookshelf for all to see.
It's the irony that gets me. Faith in the faithless?
How about hearing the devil, or thinking that can outcast it (him?). I don't know how to set up hyperlinks, so you'd have to copy this into your browser.

"The difference is that one of them sees Heaven and one sees snakes" -Amanda Ziller (Her response tothis quote in "Another Roadside Attraction" by Tom Robbins)
Maybe we should send the Exorcist to the white house, eh?
Or better yet, a good ol' fashioned anti-christ.
"Or better yet, a good ol' fashioned anti-christ."
Won't be long now.

Also, the difference is that snakes exist and heaven can only be experienced through opiates.
