a flag burnin!
i'm a rage'n liberal as much as the next, but oh noes for the flag
Watching this Monday night, I remember thinking, "Uh oh, they burned a flag - they're gonna get some letters on that...".
By the end of the bit, I was thinking, "You know, the flag might not be their biggest problem..."
Still f'ing hilarious, tho...
"They hate us anyway"
It was a little plastic flag made in china...
Besides...
Soldiers fighting for "freedom" are not dying so you can WAVE the flag...They are dying so you can indeed BURN the flag...
Freedom is Freedom...you either have it ..or you Dont!
By the way, I'm writing from Japan. For the record, the Japanese tourist actually said very complimentary things, such as "New York is the best city in the world," and "Americans like to drink" — words which were mistranslated for comic value which is okay by me. I have only heard such glowing sentiments from Japanese while in America, never in Japan. Generally speaking, Japanese love foreigners when they are outside of Japan (or at least pretend to) and hate them when they are inside Japan. "Atode ne." = "Catch you later."
As a 'foreigner', i love American culture - music, movies, books, technology. That is a product of your way of life, so in that sense that is an endorsement of your society.
But ...
From what i can gather, 'American ideology' applied domestically and internationally are two completely different things.
American courts do an outstanding job of upholding American core values on the domestic stage. But there doesn't seem to be this sort of critical guardianship of values when it comes to foreign policy.
Isn't the flag just a relic of tribalism?
Guys, its satire.
rob cordry does it again...hilarious
Thanks for the Daily Show videos, they are hilarious, and my only access to the show as I don't have a TV.
Also, it is just my opinion (based on living in Japan for ten years), but I don't think it is accurate to say that "Generally speaking, Japanese love foreigners when they are outside of Japan (or at least pretend to) and hate them when they are inside Japan."
Japan is a big country, full of many different types of people, and it is misleading to try and generalize in such a way.
Just my thoughts on the subject.
BTW the Japanese guy only said very nice things about America. The last thing he said was, "I like Americans".
That term "ball bag" was f**king hilarious. Excuse the vulgarity.
LMAO omg my god, that was great... ugh if you folks dont get it seriously get a life lol
lol it was funny Don't get so imature about the damn flag, its just a flag made in china.. please get over it. If you ARE patriotic you should wave the constitution and know it!!! Now thats what a true American would do!!
Just a quick reply to anon above, of course anon is correct to point out that generalizing is misleading. I was describing the Japanese mentality, which loves to generalize, rather than a Western one. Incessesant stereotyping of foreignors, public discrimination, media surveys annoucning how little contact Japanese want with foreigners, and instituional racism prompted my remarks (which, if anon lived in Japan for ten minutes, would not have come as a surprise).
And, incidentally, to Reality Bites, what the Japanese tourist says at the end of the clip is: "Only Americans really like Americans."
Well, first of all, dear Americans, don't be that scared. :-) As far as Europe is concerned I think every sane European is still able to make the difference between the U.S. as a whole and its current president (who is indeed very unpopular here in Europe). Probably quite a lot of these currently negative poll results are rather owed to the unpopularity of George W. Bush as a person than to any subliminal prejudices towards the American people that might exist here. O.k., sure there are prejudices, but just amongst these who have always had them - and that's really a negligible minority.
There are still so many European tourists visiting the U.S., there are so many personal transatlantic friendships that this temporary decrease in popularity (thats furthermore directed towards a single person and not to the country) will not last long. - There's a very interesting scientific study by the PewResearchCenter on the different countries' reputation all over the world that has been published just recently:
http://pewglobal.org/reports/display.php?ReportID=247
Interesting: Look at the table which effects the re-election of George W. Bush had on the popularity of the U.S. in Western Europe ...
By the way: Since I am German, a personal relief for me: The worst rating for my country actually comes ... from the Germans themselves ... :-)
And, just as a general remark: Please continue to post these great Daily Show clips! I still haven't found a way to get this via satellite (? - if possible at all) here in Germany, so your blog is a great source. :)
If you are interested in what the Japanese tourist was saying, he asked questions. The first question was "Is horse racing famous in America?" Second, "Is New York the best city in America"?" Third, "do Americans like to drink?" and fourth "Do Americans like Americans?".
Just in case you are interested.....
Hey, anon, you're right. Those are questions. My connection is slow and not so clear (it's NTT after all). On a second closer listen I admit to faulty listening comprehension (close but no cigar). gomen ne.
