Norm you have read much more good fiction than I have--but if you put our lists together we would have a full list, almost.
No Dante or Goethe? Chaucher or Sophocles? Get thee immediately to the book store and get the Mandelbaum Dante. Even an atheist will be fascinated by Dante's tour through heaven and hell. ;.) My Dante teacher thought that Dante wasn't even a Christian.
The list has to have some spanish literature besides Cervantes. Two good starts would be Marquez's Cien Anos de Soledad and Jorge Luis Borges' Ficciones. I think that Borges beats about any North American besides Melville, but much of that is taste.

Okay, I've ordered the Mandelbaum Dante. Actually I think I've read Sophocles, and perhaps some of the others you mention. If I did in was in the sixties, I just don't remember. A good reason to read them again for the first time. At least between the two of us we are extremely well read.
