The Laughing Stock
"The fact that political candidates, even those of education and intelligence like Howard Dean, are obliged to feign religious faith in order to stand a chance of getting elected, makes the United States the laughing stock of the civilized world."—Richard Dawkins

I was going to delete the extras, but I kind of like the symmetry. Or is it all good things come in three or... :)

Ouch and too true. But as was pointed out by Jonathon in his weblog today, sometimes you have to get into the mind of the people you're trying to convince and speak their language in order to succeed.

You're right Shelley, but sometimes it's just too damn messy inside those heads, and though it may be less effective it can be more satisfying just to be blunt as Dawkins was. I'm adding sneaky to my list of Bb traits. I'd already read Jonathon's post and know who he credits with that excellent bit of wisdom.

If you want to convince someone of your point of view, Shelley has it right. But it can be dangerous to get into the mind of monsters.
He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster. And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you. -Friedrich Nietzsche

This country is very religious and wants its leaders to spout this stuff too. Sad but true.

Well, I hope Dawkins' comment doesn't gain too much currency. Just look at the hay they made today out of an ad submitted to MoveOn that didn't get selected as a finalist and will never be aired.
Still, I'm curious; where did he make this comment?
