My Papa Said
To occupy Iraq would instantly shatter our coalition, turning the whole Arab
world against us and make a broken tyrant into a latter-day hero ... assigning
young soldiers to a fruitless hunt for a securely entrenched dictator and
condemning them to fight in what would be an un-winnable urban guerilla war. It
could only plunge that part of the world into even greater instability.
George Bush Sr., in _A World Transformed_, 1998

Vinny informs me that I have quoted out of context. Here is the line that comes before the part I quoted.
"Our stated mission, as codified in UN resolutions, was a simple one -- end the aggression, knock Iraq's forces out of Kuwait, and restore Kuwait's leaders."
I frankly don't see how it changes the meaning at all.
Is there some evidence somewhere that Bush Sr. then or now thought it was a good idea to conquer Iraq and occupy it. If there is I'd like to see it.
Bush Sr. and Barbara Bush may say a lot of things in support of their son, but the fact remains that Bush Sr.'s foreign policy was worlds apart from W.'s. While there are grounds to criticize the first Gulf War as well, Bush Sr's policy was aimed at strengthening the U.N. and other international law rather than embarrassing U.N. allies and discrediting that insitution. However inconsistent it may have been with our previous, cynical support of Saddam, it was also justified under international standards of just war and supported by the international community. Bush Sr.'s foreign policy was based on reasonable self-interest and concern for established institutions, while W.'s has been mainly a mix of ideology and wishful thinking.
Whether Bush Sr. supported the war is mostly irrelevant, since his words of caution against the idea in 1998 have been completely accurate.
