Bill Maher blogging. I agree it could be interesting, but in an irritating, waste-of-time kind of way. Seriously, listening to him makes me think about political rhetoric, American culture, etc., but I really can't stand the guy.

On his now defunct show, I never saw a single guest that had intelligent and complex points to make. He liked to get idiot celebrities with opinions on there, as well as people who were extreme so that the audience would boo and hiss at them while Bill would jump in with his self-satisfied idiot-populist nonsense.

"Politically incorrect", the title, was among the worst parts of the show. Political correctness has now developed such a popular legend that political incorrectness now stands, in the minds of some fools, as a catchword which means "no-nonsense straight talk" or, in some cases "the absolute gospel truth". It's just as often impolitic raving and common ignorance.

"Political incorrectness" in this sense is nothing more than a smirk or a gleam in the eye of someone, like Bill O'Reilly or Bill Maher, who gets to feel popular, independent, brave, and inquisitive when in fact they are at best only the first.

I watched a couple of episodes of his new show and found them boring. I did enjoy the one with the Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder. A waste of time, indeed, but sometimes a welcome diversion.

Whoops posted to the wrong article :-)

I'm with Dende on this - I watched his old show a coupleof times and simply found it inane, boring and predictable. i can't imagine his blog to be any different. I'll pass.

I've watched a couple of his HBO shows, and they're... interesting. I'll link him and read for a while; there's some funny items currently listed.

The posts on the blog seem to me to be more of the same. When I say "idiot-populist nonsense", I mean when he says stuff like 'stop trial lawyers from ruining sports like they've ruined everything else in this country'. I agree with him that there could be some good tort reform in this country--for one thing, in many lawsuits a few lawyers and a handful of victims strike it rich while many other victims are left with nothing. But that doesn't mean that "trial lawyers are ruining everything." It's an open, difficult question, but Maher refuses to refer to arguments or evidence, rather he throws out a few buzz words for the people who hate lawyers for one reason or another.

It's populist because while it may be "controversial" in the style it's presented, almost everthing is based on popular dogmas and cliches.
