Why Wasn't I Told?
Why hasn't anyone told me about Jack Johnson? I visited the Apple Music Store several days ago and saw that the top download was Jack Johnson's "On and On" A few days later I saw that Matt was listening to Flake I've now downloaded both of Jack Johnson's albums at the Apple Music Store. This is the first new artist I've really liked in twenty years. Okay so I listen mostly to classical music and a little jazz, but I do listen to all kinds of music and thought I'd been exposed to anything I might like. I was wrong this is superb. Thoughtful lyrics, an acoustic guitar, and melodic music that is fresh and that speaks not only to our times, but to the human spirit.
This song, Jack Johnson - The News is
From the album "Brushfire Fairytales" 2001
A billion people died on the news tonight
But not so many cried at the terrible sight
Well mama said
It's just make believe
You can't believe everything you see
So baby close your eyes to the lullabies
On the news tonight
Who's the one to decide that it would be alright
To put the music behind the news tonight
Well mama said
You can't believe everything you hear
The diagetic world is so unclear
So baby close your ears
On the news tonight
On the news tonight
The unobtrusive tones on the news tonight
And mama said
Mmm
Why don't the newscasters cry when they read about people who die
At least they could be decent enough to put just a tear in their eyes
Mama said
It's just make believe
You cant believe everything you see
So baby close your eyes to the lullabies
On the news tonight
His second album "On and On" may even be better here are some interesting lyrics from a song called The Horizon Has Been Defeated
Listen
the horizon has been defeated
by the pirates of the new age
alien casinos
well maybe it's just time to say
things can go bad
and make you want to run away
but as we grow older
the troubles just seems to stay
future complications
in the strings between the cans
but no prints can come from fingers
if machines become our hands
and then our feet become the wheels
and then the wheels become the cars
and then the rigs begin to drill
until the drilling goes too far
things can go bad
and make you want to run away
but as we grow older
the horizon begins to fade away
thingamajigsaw puzzled
anger don't you step too close
because people are lonely and only
animals with fancy shoes
hallelujah zig zag nothing
misery it's on the loose
because people are lonely and only
animals with too many tools
that can build all the junk that we sell
sometimes it makes you want to yell
things can go bad
and make you want to run away
but as we grow older
the horizon begins to fade away
A final note. It looks like I've played my part in making Apples online music store a sucess.
Apple doubles online music success
Apple's new iTunes online music store has continued its run-away success, with more than two million songs downloaded within its first 16 days.

I just never thought to tell you about JJ. He's great isn't he? You ever listen to Lyle Lovett? Don't laugh, now. Lyle is NOT just C & W, although he's a Texas boy. Some of his lyrics are just great, and he tends towards bluesy sounding stuff. Give him a listen. Of course, my favorite is his classic "That's Right, You're Not from Texas". Funny song.
Lyle Lovett, I'm not really sure if I could. Everytime I think of anything related to country and western it reminds me of this joke. What has 32 teeth and an IQ of 169? Answer the front row at a Willy Nelson concert.
