Wow. Amazing quote, Norm. Thanks!
I like Ike.
Great quote from the guy (if I am not mistaken) who coined the term "military-industrial complex"; of course, he used it as a term of contempt.
A related point is that the roots of American conservatism has little that resembles W.'s militarism. It's appears to me a mix of Reaganesque Cold War aggressiveness and contemporary evangelical apocalypticism. It is not the case that Eisenhower, along with Jefferson, Washington and other American conservatives were peaceniks or quasi-pacifists in their aversion to foreign wars. They realized rather (Jefferson most eloquently) that imperial nations have historically found it very difficult to be just nations.
My point is not to say that we all agree, when you get right down to it. Rather, I think that opposition to this war can be made just as easily using classic American conservative principles as it can be using progressive principles. Robert Novak, one of CNN's in house conservatives, is an example of this kind of position.
i was just wondering if you could provide the source info for the eisenhower quote as i would like to use it in a project of mine. in what speech was it? to whom? when exactly?
