Bobby Fischer
Bobby Fischer's Pathetic Endgame
Paranoia, hubris, and hatred the unraveling of the greatest chess player
Fischer's story doesn't follow the usual celebrity-gone-to-seed arc. He has not been brought low by drugs or alcohol, by sex scandals or profligate spending. Instead he is a victim of his own mind and of the inordinate attention that the world has given it. Fischer's paranoia, rage, and hubris have been enough to transform him into an enemy of the state; they have been enough to sabotage a brilliant career and turn a confident, charismatic figure into a dithering recluse; and, sadly, they have been enough to make us forget that when Bobby Fischer played chess, it was absolutely riveting theater, even for those who didn't play the game.
Of course he hasn't come totally unraveled he referred to George W. Bush during one of his radio interviews as "borderline retarded."
But whatever else you may think about Bobby Fishcer he has left us his games. Here is a link to his "60 Most Memorable Games" for you to play through, or download the pgn file. Pgn is a text file, pgn stands for portable game notation and many chess programs can import files in this format.

Instead of calling him paranoid and delusional why not consider what he is saying to see if there is any truth to it? Obviously, his own personal grudges with Jews he's dealt with personally have colored his opinions of an entire race of people. However, when the US government puts out an arrest warrent for you and threatens to put you in jail for 10 years because you played a few games of chess who can blame you for thinking you're being persecuted? Under the circumstances is he really so far out beyond rationality to be considered paranoid?
Secondly, when it comes to the Palestinian/Israeli matter he sees the world much more clearly than the average American. We're funding daily war crimes with our tax dollars in Israel. Israel, despite being a relatively wealthy country, gets half of all our foreign aid. Have you bothered to think about why?

Of course there is truth to some of what Fischer says, but he showed symptoms of paranoia long before an arrest warrant was issued. A chair in Iceland in 1972 that he had X rayed and removing his teeth because he thought they were transmitting his thoughts to his enemies to mention just a couple. As to your comments about Israel and Palestine a mess to be sure, and yes I have thought about it and certainly agree our actions have been heavily biased in favor of Israel. I continue to think Fishcer has a few screws loose. How you choose to label it another question. But as I said, there are his games, and they speak for themselves.

Anybody who says he is happy about 9-11-01 is not all there (yes he said he was 'happy') Paranoid people always have thiere things stolen (so they think) and Fischer has always had something stolen by someone 'out to get him'. It is clear there is something wrong with his perception of reality.

Of course the US is backing Israel, they are the only true democracy in the region. And how can the US support people that blow themselves up along with as many innocent people they can possibly get. I dont care what your cause is, NOTHING justifies that. Fischer was and is a true chess genius. But here is a good example of the fine line between genius and madness.

I think that Bobby has some right to say he was happy about the September 11th attacks. Of course it's not right to kill innocent people. But it's also no right to use innocent people and exploit them as they do in arab countries. US government gives billions to these countries for energy purposes, whereas the people who own the oil reserves get all of it, and exploit everyone else in the land. Similar to the United States exploitation of people. There are things that can be done about limiting some need to exploit people in the US. Also, the US claims that there was an attack on freedom that day. Who are they kidding? The 9-11 attacks are about the opposite if you look at it in another person's viewpoint. They want to be free from the US involvement. And US remaining pals with Israel and giving them weapons of mass destruction is certainly not appreciated by the arabian community. No wonder Osama is considered a revolutionary hero to the average person over there. Sure he is a terrorist, but I don't see him attacking any more places in the US? Frankly, i don't think his intention was to kill innocent people, but rather to send a message to the US that people will not stand for the mighty control of the US no longer. A little noninvolvement is all these countries want? Why don't we just give it to them? Humanity will collapse as we know it if things go the way they are currently. Any genius could see that.. And i don't blame Bobby for being concerned and admitting his admiration for what the terrorists have done. Deep down inside, i know Bobby still likes the people in America, but just not the government. It's as simple as that

Anyone else and I would be shocked, but - as good a chess player as he is - Bobby Fischer is a nutcase.

Have you see "Beautiful Mind"??? Maybe Bobby is like that...
Posted by: Anonymous | March 13, 2003 10:14 AM
Yes I've seen the movie and enjoyed it. It is certainly true that Bobby has some serious neurosis, many would say psychosis. Are they the same as those in Beautiful mind probably not but equally debilitating.

Lets get one thing clear ,Fischer was applauding a presumed attack on the whitehouse and the petagon, not the world trade center !
Posted by: guy | September 20, 2003 4:30 PM
In the interview after 9-11 it was made clear that the World Trade Center was the focus of the attack. Bobby Fischer may be a genius at chess, but his politics are juvenile. If the Jews really hated Bobby as much as he maintains, then he would be dead already. If the Jews were as powerful as Bobby Fischer maintains, he would be dead already. Sorry Bobby, but everyone has gone on with their lives; no one really cares what you say or do. Bobby Fischer is perhaps the strongest Chess player ever, but only Bobby Fischer can be blamed for erasing this legacy, and leaving a legacy of paranoia and hatred instead.

I would like to add some thought to this discussion. In regards to bobby fischer not knowing politics I tend to disagree. Even Gary Kasparov once said, " The game of chess is just like politics, you analyse a position and hopefully make the right decision " so maybe bobby understands more of what is going on this world than what me or any of you will ever be able to understand.

Gary Kasparov and many other chess grandmasters have the tendency to think that chess is somehow significant and trenscends its own petty rules and boundaries; it doesn't. Chess is essentially a worthless pastime for people who think they're doing something clever but actually wasting their time (as Shaw was quoted as saying once). Politics and chess are completely different; there is far more to politics than simply "analyzing positions." (Analyzing positions and making decisions can apply to any human activity; not just chess. All human activities require linear "analyzing," and yet are very different from chess or politics. In the same sense, the ability to swim well does not make one a good basketball player.) Many chess players are oblivious when it comes to politics, just like many politicians are terrible at chess. There are many geniuses in fields like physics and mathematics, but end up being idiots in politics and economics (Einstein being one example).
As for your idiotic "beyond your or my comprehension" argument, it is just that -idiotic. If he indeed beyond your compehension, then I don't have to take your word for it, do I? In any case, he provides absolutely no coherent argument but ramblings against a jew-controlled world conspiracy, a jew-controlled United States and so forth. There are plenty of white supremecist nutcases who have the same opinions that he does; and Fischer's opinions are sanctified because of his high IQ? Smart people often make bigger mistakes than others, and some of the most idiotic statements in history have come from the mouths of "smart" and "educated" people.
There were many intelligent people who were geniuses in their own field but idiotic in others. (Kaczynski was a brilliant mathematician until his killing spree started. His manifesto is a work of sheer idiocy, revealing nothing about the author but a hopelessly deluded -not to mention reactionary -romantic.) John Nash was a brilliant mathematician, but also was anti-semetic during his phases or szhichoprenia. There is not even enought evidence to assume that Fischer is even completely sane.
And "Kris," as for your arrogant "holier than thou" attitude with regards to bringing "thought" to this discussion (as if no one else ever did or attempted to do), you DID bring thought -defective thought. As for your idiotic "beyond your or my comprehension" argument, it is just that -idiotic. If he indeed beyond your compehension, then I don't have to take your word for it, do I? Bobby is right: the Jews are immoral, always have been, and are screwing America to death today. These are facts. AND WE ALL KNOW IT.
The only difference about Bobby is THAT HE SAYS IT.
Today America is in the same situation as the Roman Empire c. 450 AD ~ about to fall. And who will be left with the cash when the smoke clears?
Bet your last dollar - the Jews.
