Perpetual War

I just finished reading Gore Vidal's latest.
perpetualwar.jpg
Perpetual War For Perpetual Peace subtitled "How We Got To Be So Hated". This is a short selection of essays. Vidal is arguably the premier essayist of our time. Outspoken, well spoken, eloquent only begin to describe his considerable talents. Dennis Miller eat your heart out this guy takes the rant to new heights. This is the book that will drive the "WarBloggers" crazy. Gore will be labeled as anti-American at worst and unpatriotic at best. He makes an interesting point about why he feels Bush declared "we are at war", since a nation can only be at war with another nation-state, which would exclude bin Laden and his troop. Corporate America of course those insurance companies could save big bucks, since they don't have to cover loses due to "war". I'm a liberal. I generally agree with Mr. Vidal. I do think he tends to get carried away with possible conspiracy theories. He never comes right out and says he believes there is a conspiracy rather he implies that is the case. He presents some evidence and lets you draw your own conclusions. In the past I have discounted much of his ranting, but I must say he certainly gives pause for thought. I understand the book was delayed due to our nations sensitivity to 9-11. Gore begins the first essay with "According to the Koran it was on Tuesday that Allah created darkness. Last September 11th when suicide pilots were crashing commercial airliners into crowded American Buildings I did not have to look to the calendar to see what day it was: Dark Tuesday was casting its long shadow across Manhattan and along the Potomac river." He asks the why questions, not very popular with a nation in mourning, but necessary I think. There is some corporate bashing, and damn if they don't deserve it, and some reasons why "We Got To Be So Hated". He also spends considerable time discussing Timothy McVeigh and his controversial relationship with him. This is fascinating stuff. Timothy McVeigh, August 14, 1997 just prior to being officially sentenced to death said, "If the Court please, I wish to use the words of Justice Brandeis dissenting in Olmstead to speak for me. He wrote, 'Our Government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example.' "That's all I have."
Here is the entire closing statement of Justice Brandeis, certainly something to think about in this time of eroding personal freedoms.
"Decency, security, and liberty alike demand that government officials shall be subjected to the same rules of conduct that are commands to the citizen. In a government of laws, existence of the government will be imperiled if it fails to observe the law scrupulously. Our government is the potent, the omnipresent teacher. For good or for ill, it teaches the whole people by its example. Crime is contagious. If the government becomes a lawbreaker, it breeds contempt for law; it invites every man to become a law unto himself; it invites anarchy. To declare that in the administration of the criminal law the end justifies the means-to declare that the government may commit crimes in order to secure the conviction of a private criminal-would bring terrible retribution. Against that pernicious doctrine this court should resolutely set its face." Gore Vidal has trouble believing that Timothy McVeigh acted essentially alone and presents his reasons. The book also has short essays entitled "The Bill of Rights", "The New Theocrats" to mention just a couple.
I recommend this book highly to both my conservative and liberal friends.
Just his writing is worth the read, and if you enjoy what you read, I would also recommend his collection of essays The Last Empire Essays 1992-2000 as worthwhile. Vidal is one of my favorite authors. His biographical novel Burr about Aaron Burr is one of my all time favorites.

Gore Vidal:

I listened to the Alan Colmes talk show on the radio with Gore Vidal. I tried to call because he was talking about his book and the possibility that someone in the government knew about the threats of a terrorist attack. I wanted to talk about the story on Frontline…“The Man Who Knew” a story about John O’Neil. He worked for the FBI, and for six years John O’neill was the expert on Al Qaeda. He warned of it’s threat to the US but he was drummed out of the FBI. If the CIA had shared information with the FBI back in Jan. 2001 about a meeting in Malaysia and a participant named Khallad it might have helped O’Neill uncover the 9/11 conspirators. The person screening the calls asked me what I wanted to say and I told him. He hung the phone up on me. I called back five times and they put me on hold and hung up every time. I listened to the program and mostly people that wanted him to leave the country got on the air. I believe this is manipulation and gives the listener the idea that everyone agrees with the talk host which is false. They put this Alan Colmes on the air because it is supposed to be liberal. The area has nothing on the air but Right Wing and they say the public only wants that. They are also saying they are giving people the chance to speak. That is not happening and they should be regulated by the FCC. The reason is to prevent this type of manipulation and brainwashing. I included a letter I wrote and sent to organizations asking for some interest in doing something about the situation here. It is a good description of the people and the place this man Gore Vidal was speaking to.

Deprogramming America … “It Is The Worst of Times.”

At times nearly everyone will admit that their leaders are derisory, but how things got this bad is something nobody wants to discuss.

Through Machiavellian scheming these bloodsuckers have finally dominated most of the country especially the South. This obnoxious medley of Right Wing interest in business, politics, and religion, are treacherous and ferocious! They move stealthily (creeps) into various groups or organizations to pressure the members into embracing the Religious Right’s ideas. There has been a systematic obliteration of contrasting ideas by ostracizing and vilifying those who oppose the Right Wing fundamentalist. The majority of people kowtow to these automatons because they know what these “ditto heads” and “dirty tricksters” can do to them. Their buds are placed in key positions in the workplaces, schools, and political positions.

Singling people out for abuse and creating a hostile environment on jobs and in schools is absolutely happening. The high-level employees usually don’t participate in the harassment; the peons are exploited for these purposes. People regarded as their enemies (Not Right Wing Fundamentalist) who work with the public have people sent to them to make nasty remarks and threats. They do “monitor” people on these types of jobs, but verbal abuse and threats could never be of any value in the evaluation of an employee. Anyone objecting to this abuse is called a liar and accused of behaving inappropriately. If someone being abused doesn’t change (embrace the religious right) they will be told they need counseling (brainwashing). Numerous professions have their own “associations” to handle employees that complain. Those who complain are accused of being the problem, because they know you wouldn’t be harassed if you fit the mold.

I recognized the abuse described by Anita Hill when she was testifying at the confirmation hearings for Clarence Thomas, when he was being appointed to the Supreme Court. The hearings exposed disgusting behavior, but did not expose the motive. I know it is difficult for most people to fathom the intent of this type of humiliation, but it is to cause that person to become unstable and broken so that they will be like putty. Then the master shapes that gob of goo into their fundamentalist mold. Some people viciously attacked Anita Hill for speaking out when she accused her boss, a black man, of harassing her. It is absolutely disgusting to watch these manipulators of people use “civil rights” laws for their sick purposes. The Religious Right fanatics don’t need “Rights” because they own the Supreme Court!

The DFW area is inundated with dangerous Right Wing fanatics! The talk radio Jockeys and Televangelists permeate the airwaves with fundamentalism and extreme “Right Wing” dogma never-ending without any genuine opposition. These “choir boys” answer to nobody.

They have developed a stronghold throughout Texas by using militant tactics that are shocking and disturbing. “Holy Roller Land, ” North Texas, is the area between Dallas and Ft. Worth, and was always the perfect place for “fundamentalist.” The overpopulated cities are swarming with mosquitoes, rats, fleas, and narrow-minded, brainwashed, poorly clued-up conformists. (Could they be inbreeding?) Because of the control that the “Religious Right” has over the media “Seldom is heard a discouraging word.” Once the mid-cities was a collection of grubby little towns, but then the Vietnam War and the MILITARY-RELIGION-POLITICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX contributed to it becoming so prosperous that they urbanized out the wazoo! Yep, “God is Good,” the gargantuan shopping malls, and larger-than-life fanatic domes are a testimony to the prosperity of the area (what a waste of prosperity). There is a virtual reality church-theater with four screens and surround sound, you feel just like you’re being crucified.

Those that desperately want to belong to their “club” are easy to spot; the men are usually sporting crosses big enough to crucify a small cat on their chest while strutting around (no matter how repulsive) as if they are God’s gift. Stranger than fiction are the “nice” Right Wing conservative ladies. These “neat ladies” have a dress code that disallows individuality. They have a “thing” about wearing jeans; they seem to associate wearing jeans anywhere, outside a hog pin, with being liberal. The “right choice” is a skirt or dress that comes to the ankles. To really belong to the “club”, a woman must glob make-up on with a trowel until her own mother wouldn’t recognize her, and ‘liberal’ long hair can only be tolerated if worn in a bun. Women who prefer the natural look necessitate attacks from bleached blonde vitriolic, overweight, conservative “ladies.” These “avant-garde” females (ha ha!) demonstrate their awareness of protocol by becoming violent and abusive when they encounter those who disagree with them. Their convoluted principles involve a scheme to emasculate nonconformists, while they buck up people with defects like the craters on the moon, because they “do the right thing.” They call this an open-minded attitude! Taking a rain check on their invitation to become a born-again android is reason enough for harassment in a variety of nasty ways. They circulate nasty rumors about their so-called “enemies,” they frame them, pick fights with them, and if all fails they just flat out lie on them. The reason for this idiocy is to disturb their adversaries in order to provoke a response, and then they can accuse those angry people of being mentally sick. The (People That Love Money) won’t love you.

In the 60’s when JFK came to Dallas, the Democrats had some power and influence within this area; huge throngs of friendly people greeted him. His very public execution was the end of all that. The covetous executioners have eliminated people (Rest In Peace) who possessed qualities that these tedious terds couldn’t compete with. They call this winning! The “King’s Kids” are convinced that they deserve to rule (Imperialists) because they are blessed. Only an insecure hypocrite would need to lie, cheat, or slaughter to get what they wanted. Nobody fights; they just cave in or move on.

Today in North Texas, a lot of the political races have one candidate with no opposition, even from their own party. They are not being challenged, and very few Democrats run for office in North Texas. Those who do run don’t oppose the Right Wing Fundamentalist they mimic them. In the last Presidential election we were told at City Hall that in our district we had to go to the Baptist church to vote, another man in line was told that his district was voting in the Presbyterian Church. In the meantime we are being told that one of the excuses for going to war with Iraq is because “they are brainwashed terrorists, and their leader is coercing everyone into an evil religion.” No “Separation of Church and State.” (Um Huh!) Some of the politicians in Texas are saying, “Separation of Church and State is a myth.” (You bet it is!) The political puppets, locally and in Washington, claim that Iraq and Iran are violating the “human rights” of their people! American interests backed the Shaw of Iran, who was removed from power by the people of Iran because of the atrocities he committed against them. I agree no one should be singled out for abuse because of what they say or think! It’s totally unacceptable to the American people who prize their freedoms.

Another issue overlooked by the politicians in Texas is health care. Texas is near the bottom of the list on ratings for health care, but the Religious Right railed out against a National Health Care plan. They circulated rumors that the health care card was the “Mark of the Beast,” but they don’t have any problems with charlatans selling miracle cures or faith healers. I don’t know if there are “faith healers” in the Middle East, but we have enough of them, and they are the pits. They claim to cure everything from constipation to aids, and the deception goes much farther than the fact that these loud-mouthed soothsayers couldn’t cure a hangnail. I haven’t observed any decrease in illnesses because of the profusion of faith healers into Texas. They are allowed to live, work and go to school here without infringements upon their civil rights.

Education is without a doubt an additional brainwashing tool for the Religious Right, and it’s not something new, this started long ago. When I was in the ninth grade the English teacher was ecstatic because Nixon was running for President. When we entered the classroom every day, she posted figures to prove that Nixon was winning in the polls. One day, in one of her more manic moods, she announced that Nixon would win! I spoke up and said, “I don’t like Nixon and I hope that he loses.” The class hissed and booed and called me dirty names. The teacher reluctantly stopped this by hesitantly stating that, “I had the right to be for Kennedy.” Some time after this, she asked the class to answer questions about the books, music, and the programs we watched on television. She was reading from a paper and she was making notes as we answered. Clearly I was not in sync with this class, when the “teacher” asked, “who likes The Twilight Zone,” I was the only one that raised my hand, and the whole class booed. This went on throughout the interrogation; I believe this was done to develop a profile on the people that could be “difficult” (or should be sent to Vietnam?) When I was in High School a boy that sat in front of me in History class committed suicide, but I survived to be abused for many more years.

Another issue is the Separation of Church and State that the Right Wing believes is a “myth.” They want the “ministries” to take over social issues even though their stupid rhetoric indicates that they believe people are only needy because “they don’t know Jesus.” Nobody would be anything but rich if they were indoctrinated with their distorted version of the “Teachings of Christ.” They want distraught people turned over to this animal farm so they can brand the starving people. The (Democrat) mayor of Dallas is calling for an ordinance to prohibit panhandling in Dallas because of all the homeless unemployed people, how did she come up with this? Is that how our leaders should be dealing with these social problems? That’s not as bad though, as the man that I went to school with, who became a Presbyterian Preacher, and got on television to announce that he thought the homeless should have their children taken away from them. (Hiss Boo!) They don’t even put a thin veneer over this pigswill that they are trying to pass off as compassion. They want to force their garbage down the throats of starving and homeless people, and if they don‘t swallow it they can die. Added to all of that the “churches” are begging for money all the time, for everything from bringing the world via satellite to “Jesus,” or to “win the lost at any cost.“ This incestuous putrid cabal parrots these phrases to get funds, but what they really want is to build bigger and more profitable “fanatic domes,” that they don’t pay taxes on. There is very little investigation into their activities because of their connections politically, and economically.

They can make believe that they are superior, and I am almost certain that they will continue to victimize those who reject them. I won’t become a “team player” because; to coin a phrase they are ”full of baloney.” Reflecting on all of this I have come to the realization that I have most defiantly made the right (left) choice!

Linda Henderson

Linda,

Thanks for taking the time to comment. You had a lot on your mind. You express many of the frustrations those of us on the left feel. It is a difficult problem analyzing what we should have known. There is an interesting post at Fallacy Files Weblog that stresses the importance of allowing for cognitive bias when considering and reviewing a chain of events. Having said that the lack of investigation and public discussion of 9-11 and the aftermath is unacceptable. I suspect much of the problem has to do with the arrogance of those in power. The we're handling it don't worry mentality. Again thanks for your words voices from the left are always welcome.
